Why Does Going to a Brain Gym Help Us Make Progress on Cognitive Skills?

Many studies in the areas of physical training, smoking cessation, weight management, stress management, and general areas of learning and education have found that regular, consistent, and structured exercise produces results. One of the key challenges in any exercise or behavior management program, whether it is running or swimming or lifting weights or weight or stress management or working on increasing memory skills, is compliance, or sticking to a program to get results.

Motivating ourselves to achieve whatever goal we want is really hard work. Some people have the self-discipline and daily motivation to stick to a program and make significant gains. Most people do not. We need the support of other people in a structured program to help us make progress. That is why many of us choose to work out at the gym rather than alone in our own homes. And many of us have learned we are more apt to stick with a program if we are in a place specifically geared to our goals where there are others seeking the same goal. We humans like company when we’re working hard to achieve a goal. Exercise classes, gyms, Weight Watchers, AA, and many, many other programs have proven the efficacy of this approach over time, with many, many supporting studies now available to show the efficacy of such programs.

Going to vibrantBrains several times a week is no different. We go there specifically to practice and enhance cognitive skills in a setting specifically designed to offer us scientifically based software and other skill-building programs in a comfortable setting, with “coaches” nearby, and other people focusing hard on the same goals, just like us, eager to enjoy the benefits of our hard work: brain fitness and health.
